Shenzhen Expats

1. Brief Introduction
Shenzhen is located at the forefront of the Pearl River Delta and borders on the New Territories of Hong Kong in the south, being an important coastal communication hub in South China. Covering an area of 2,020 square kilometers, with a population of 7 million, Shenzhen had the highest population density of major cities in China. Shenzhen is a sub-tropical maritime region and its average temperature is 22.4 degrees Centigrade, and is the only city that owns seaports, airport and land ports in China.

Apart from commercial development, Shenzhen is also a rising city for tourism. There are more than 50 different scenic spots to visit whilst staying in Shenzhen, mainly including Window of the World, Splendid China, China Folk Culture Villages, Happy Kingdom, Safari Park Shenzhen and Evergreen Resort. Shenzhen won the honor of being entitled an 'International Garden City' at the 'Green Oscars' in November 2000.

2. Bank Information
It's better for foreigner to open personal bank account before investing in Shenzhen, The four biggest banks of china (BANK OF CHINA, INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL BANK OF CHINA, AGRICULTURAL BANK OF CHENA, CHINA CONSTRACTION BANK) and other commercial bank will allow foreigner to open bank account freely.

3. Shopping
There are four main commercial districts within Shenzhen city. The area around the railway station is particularly good for clothes. The district between Shanghai Hotel and Seg Electronics Co. mainly sells electric appliances, which are a particularly good bargain here. If it is smaller commodities that you are after, try the streets around Dong Men and Old District.

Famous-brand products from clothes to cosmetics are available in the flashy department stores such as Xiwu Department store and the International Commercial Market along the roads between Shenzhen Grand Theater and Renmin (People's) Bridge. Zhongying Jie (Boundary Street) in the Shatoujiao District is another good place to purchase quality products. There are a few overseas stores in the downtown area, such as Carrefour, Makro and Trust Mart. Wal Mart, the American supermarket chain, also has a branch downtown.

4. Business hours
Office hours in government departments run from 8am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Lunchtime is usually between noon and 1pm. Banking hours tend to run from 9am to noon and then from 1pm to 5.30pm. Some banks are now open on Saturdays and Sundays too. The traffic rush hour is 8-9am and 6-7pm.

5. Hotels
In the main urban centres you will find a wide range of accommodation on offer, including international five-star hotels with a full range of facilities. However, be aware that the Shenzhen tourist authorities tend to be generous in allocating stars. As a general rule, business travellers should not consider anything less than three-star accommodation. The best hotels are the Shangri-La and Hilton located by the train station, the Sheraton located by the Futian Free Trade Zone or the Crowne Plaza in the west of the city. All are 5-star and will cost you at least €200 per night. There will offer you some hotel information in Shenzhen as follow:

6. Accommodation (Expatriate housing)
Rented accommodation in Shenzhen includes the good, the bad and the ugly. Buildings are going up everywhere so there is lots of choice. Go for new apartment complexes. Most developments will have a management/sales/rental office. Just find a complex whose location you like and ask to be shown all the apartments up for rent.

Chinese taste in furniture will be very different to yours so specify that you want Western-style furniture and bathroom and air-con in every room. Most developments are high rise. Choose a high floor to avoid street noise and mosquitoes. Most landlords will push you to sign for one year but six months is also possible. It's a buyer's market so if you really like a place except for a paint job in one room or a tacky piece of furniture tell the owner and they might change it for you.

7. The cost of living

SHENZHEN ranked 44th in a latest cost-of-living survey of 144 cities around the world, rising 19 places from last year's survey, mostly due to the appreciation of the yuan.

Hong Kong, ranked fourth between third-place Tokyo and London in fifth, was the most expensive Chinese city with Beijing coming 14th. Shanghai was six places below the capital in 20th, Taipei ranked 28th, Guangzhou 54th and Tianjin 128th, one place below Bangkok.

Conducted by Mercer Human Resources Consulting, whose clients use the survey to calculate cost of living allowances for staff transferred internationally, the survey compared the prices of more than 200 items covering housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment costs.
